I think this because different cultures are mindlessly absorbed in their own culture and dominance.Some people limit themselves from the rest of the world and only open minded people will be affected by the stories. Even the news today miming from Africa is one sided. People do not see the point of view from the civilians but rather take the point of view of the more powerful nations and governments. Coverage of Africa is skewed and focuses on famines, unrest, and government and neglects to cover countries that are working to solve problems. Achebe thinks that literature is used to justify slavery and imperialism. The one sided thoughts and opinion on matters creates a divide in peeps judgments. This does not allow people too see both sides of the story and get full understanding of the situation. Achebe has great views and ideas to improve Nigeria and thinks that Nigeria has a bright future. Achebe thinks that Nigeria is unable so far to manage political transactions and peace (Achebe). According to Postman, television news have assumed positions as entertainment programs given their themes, interruption by commercials, music, individuals who are sociable and beautiful aimed at captivating the audience. The visual images are also used to market lifestyles led by the people in the television companies. This is evidenced by political quest whereby individuals assume power because of their ability to present themselves on television programs and talk shows (Postman, 1985). Quayle agrees with Postman on various aspects in relation to the effects of television on society. He agrees that the modern television news is simply a new form of entertainment. However, he adds that he has contrasted opinions about the medium that is television. In essence, Quayle is right, as he states that media has evolved into a different form of contemporary media in comparison to what Postman defined as media and specifically television media. He agrees with Postman that the increase in entertainment has resulted in a subsequent increase in what could be considered as â€Å"junk† programs (Quayle, 2009). He adds that television could not support public discourse in entirety, but some aspects of television according to him have the potency to result into great public discourse. He differentiates his argument from that posed by Postman as separated by the word â€Å"all† in reference to television programs. He states that not all programs are insufficient is the propagation of public discourse. This is according to Qualley is evidenced by the numerous shows aired simultaneously by the various cable networks which contain public discourse such as business shows, speeches by presidents and politicians. Such television programs are not what could be defined as entertainment as they aired with the aim of propagating public discourse. He also gives evidence of the recent financial crisis television airings. These television news could not be termed as aimed at merely entertaining the audience but were solely meant for educational and informative purposes to the audience (Quayle, 2009). Television has aided greatly in the various public discourses such as improving the economic knowledge of society through business shows and cable news channels. Technology has also played a significant role in the evolution of television and its role in the propagation of public discourse. Products such as technology-based gadgets like smartphones have enabled increased access to television material across the world (Quayle, 2009). He however, tends to agree on the idea that television programming is getting worse in the contemporary society in comparison to the past. It is getting worse in the context of propagating information and entertainment to consumers or audience. Thus for ecology of media to be substantiated according to Qualley it must be dynamic in nature given the high rate of communication and evolution of the same. This is due to the need to keep up with the changes present in the various communicators used in the media world. He essentially assumes a point of duality while relating to the issues brought forth by Postman. He accepts the rapid changes in the media world and specifically in the television world. On the other hand, he states that media has some positive aspects such as the propagation of public discourse (Quayle, 2009). Paul Grabowicz states that a majority of journalists in the world of media assumed the profession because of the passion for storytelling. Hence, they were all drawn by the need to provide entertainment and not to provide information to the audience. He indicates that the audience is drawn in by the presence of high quality of entertainment irrespective of lack of information. This according to the author is par of the human brain, which cannot be downplayed or assumed (Grabowicz, 2012). Digital media in the contemporary society according to the author could affect the print media or narrative as he calls it negatively. Such has resulted in an explosion, in conveyance and movement of information in the society. The â€Å"explosion† of information as he defines has resulted in content that is shallow as people are bent on providing raw information and data (Grabowicz, 2012). This could be attributed to the high accessibility of information and digital media, which enable people to, access various types of information that they are able to communicate with others in the society. Some view that the internet and other digital media as reductionism media that are aimed at reducing the narrative media. However, this new form of communication or media could be used as a platform for experiential and multidimensional storytelling to the audience. The new media platforms could provide people with avenues fro improving their creativity in the development of captivating stories for the audience (Grabowicz, 2012). He is of the opinion that the various forms of storytelling could be assumed and enhanced with the use of digital media. Essentially a story could be divided into the various segments, which could in turn be propagated via use of various media such as texts, video, audio, photos and graphic images. Creation of stories into the identified formats enhances accessibility of such knowledge. Accessibility comes into play in that various individuals have access to the provided formats of storage of the reading material. Hence, this is a form of giving power to the people through knowledge (Grabowicz, 2012). In addition, he emphasizes of the need to develop the stories or narratives to fit into the various needs of the audience (Grabowicz, 2012). Audience needs vary mainly due the ages of the audience. History, Settlement Essay As a city, Anchorage did not develop until relatively recently in American history. In fact, it was not incorporated until 1923. People had been living in Anchorage for many years before this, however. Like most of America, the area around Anchorage, Alaska was first populated as a trading post, due to the coastal waterways surrounding Anchorage. It was first populated as Captain Cook in 1778 was looking for the elusive Northwest Passage. The land upon which Anchorage stands was discovered on Captain Cook’s third attempt to find the Northwest Passage, and one of the arms of the inlet he mistook as a river, which he named River Turnagain. Later, George Vancouver renamed the inlet Turnagain Arm (Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, 2005). The Russians also heavily explored the area and setup trading posts throughout the area. The second factor for the location of Anchorage is the discovery of gold. In 1888, gold was discovered in the region, causing the Alaskan Gold Rush and bringing thousands of Americans to the area to find their fame and fortune. One of the most famous gold rush settlements was James Girdwood’s stake 40 miles south of Anchorage at the Crow Creek Mine. In 1912, Alaska became an official territory of the United States. The third reason for the present day location of Anchorage was the construction of the Alaskan Railroad. Anchorage was founded when the United States Congress commissioned the first railroad funded by the government and constructed across the Alaskan lands. In 1915 the route was established, and 2000 Americans flooded to the Ship Creek Valley to begin work on the railroad. On July 9, 1915 president Woodrow Wilson initiated the â€Å"Great Anchorage Lot Sale† where the first 600 plots of land in Anchorage were sold. Businesses spread along 4th avenue, and a school was built, thus creating the first metropolitan area of Anchorage (Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, 2005). In 1923, the Alaskan railway was finished, from Seward to Fairbanks, passing through Anchorage. The fourth reason Anchorage stands where it does today is because of the event of WWII and the threat of the Japanese and Russians. Anchorage and Alaska are strategically located close to Russia and Japan. In 1947 the government begins development of the Fort Richardson Army Post and the Elmendorf Air Force Base. During WWII, Alaska experienced a sharp growth in infrastructure and population during those years. Finally, the discovery of oil in Alaska in 1968 caused the most recent boom in Anchorage’s growth. In 1974 construction began on the trans-Alaska pipeline system, resulting in a modern day boom as the construction and engineering companies setup headquarters in Anchorage. Regional Context Anchorage is located in Southeast Alaska (see map below). It is bordered by the Chugach Mountains and glaciers to the east, the west and northwest by branches of Cook’s Inlet (the farthest north the Pacific Ocean reaches), Mount McKinley to the North, and the Kenai Peninsula to the south. There are over 40 active volcanoes to the Southwest of Anchorage, and the entire area is mountainous. In fact, in 1990, Mount Redoubt erupted, covering Anchorage in a 2 inch layer of volcanic ash (Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, 2005). Overall, the area of Anchorage is larger than Rhode Island.

Movies ultimately engage two of the main senses, vision and hearing. Director Steven Spielberg once said, â€Å"The eye sees better when the sound is great.† Sound is just as imperative as an element as every additional component of film form. As stated in the textbook on page 41 â€Å"Any attentive filmgoer is aware of the enormous power music holds in shaping the film experience, manipulating emotions and point of view, and guiding perceptions of characters, moods, and narrative events† (Gorbman). The sound, in the majority of narrative films is the element that provides distinctive cues that assist the spectators from expectations with reference to significance; and in numerous occasions, sound essentially helps to shape the audiences analyses and interpretations regarding the film. For this final paper, I want to discuss the importance of sound in three of the films viewed this semester. These three films are: Bonnie and Clyde the 1967 film by Arthur Penn, The re Will Be Blood the 2007 film by Paul Thomas Anderson and Bamboozled the 2000 film by Spike Lee. With omission of the chase scenes, there was virtually no music heard in the film Bonnie and Clyde. There wasn’t an accompanying piano, orchestra or string quartet reminiscent of most other films. However, there is the hillbilly banjo music that is played merely throughout these chase scenes in the film. If there were not any music playing throughout these scenes, I think that spectators would construe the chase scenes as being nerve-racking and perilous getaways. But, the Barrow Gang as they called themselves, were an entertaining company that thought everything they were doing was comical. Another scene in Bonnie and Clyde that I found that vastly utilized sound was th... ...pleasant to watch, that is if it is done correctly. Lines Written in Early Spring by William Wordsworth is a comparison of the state of nature to the state of mankind. This fits into the Romantic period because of how many of Wordsworth’s poems represented the revolt against contemporary English poetry, which he believed should have been based on true emotion, rather than intellect and style. There is evidence that Wordsworth is writing about nature and the poor state mankind when he writes: â€Å"In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts bring sad thoughts to the mind† (Stanza 1, Lines 3-4). Also, he suggests that mankind and nature should not be as different as they are in terms of happiness, when he writes: â€Å"To her fair works did nature link the human soul that through me ran; And much it greaves my heart to think what man has made of man† (Stanza 2, Lines 7-8). Wordsworth makes use of many literary devices in Lines Written in Early Spring. Personification is the most common of literary devices used. Examples of this are shown when he writes: â€Å"And ’tis my faith that every flower Enjoys the air it breathes† (Stanza 3, Lines 11-12). He is giving a flower the human characteristic of enjoying the air it â€Å"breathes†. Another example of personification in this poem is when Wordsworth writes: â€Å"The budding twigs spread out their fan, To catch the breezy air† (Stanza 5, Lines 17-18). In this verse he is giving budding twigs the human characteristic of spreading out to catch breezy air. Wordsworth also describes nature as a being rather than a thing when he writes: â€Å"If this belief from heaven be sent, If such be Nature’s holy plan† (Stanza 6, Lines 21-22). In this verse he describes nature as having the ability to plan. This poem also reflects on Wordsworth appreciation and love for nature, as he sees it as a force rather than just a thing. This poem is a good representation of its time period because it gives insight into how many people neglected nature, and furthermore, gives insight into the troubles and lifestyles of people during the Romantic Era.

With a household of six people, the laundry needs to be done daily or else it will overtake the house quickly. To help illustrate the laundry process I have used Microsoft Word to create a flowchart that depicts the process. Using flowcharts is valuable because the flow of logic is shown throughout the process. Much like a blueprint for a building, a flowchart depicts the development of a process.Factors that affect the process design Water temperature and water level are the factors that affect process of the design. Both factors will determine how the laundry gets done. Performing the process design for laundry is broken down into the following steps. 1. ) Sort the clothes between whites, light colors, and dark colors 2. ) Check that the pockets are empty a. If pockets are empty move to step 3 b. Reporting Money to Customs at the Canadian Border When traveling to and from Canada, there are rules surrounding what youre allowed to bring into and out of the country. Canadians returning home must declare any goods they purchased or otherwise acquired while out of the country. This includes things like gifts, prizes, and awards, including items that will be shipped later. Anything purchased at a Canadian or foreign duty-free shop also must be declared.   A good rule of thumb when returning to Canada through customs: If youre not sure whether or not  something needs to be declared, its better to declare it and clear it with border personnel. It would be much worse to fail to declare something that officers discover later. Officials can seize any goods being illegally imported into Canada and, if  caught, youre likely to face penalties and fines. If you try to bring a firearm or other weapon into Canada without declaring it, you could face criminal charges. Bringing Money Into Canada There are no limits to the amount of money that travelers may bring into or take out of Canada. However, amounts of $10,000 or more must be reported to customs officials at the Canadian border.  Anyone who fails to report amounts of $10,000 or more could find their funds seized, and face a penalty between  $250 and $500. If you are carrying $10,000 or more in coins, domestic and foreign bank notes, securities such as travelers checks, stocks, and bonds, you must complete a Cross-Border Currency or Monetary Instruments Report - Individual Form E677. If the money is not your own, you should complete Form E667 Cross-Border Currency or Monetary Instruments Report - General. The form should be signed and handed to a customs officer for review. Completed forms are sent to the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Center of Canada (FINTRAC) for assessment and analysis. Non-Canadians Visiting Canada Anyone bringing goods into Canada must declare them to a border officer. This rule applies to cash and other items of monetary value. Its a good idea to have some idea of exchange rates because the minimum amount required to be declared is $10,000 in Canadian dollars. Personal Exemptions for Returning Canadians Canadian residents or temporary residents returning to Canada from a trip outside the country and former Canadian residents returning to live in Canada may qualify for personal exemptions. This allows them to bring a certain value of goods into Canada without having to pay the regular duties. Theyll still have to pay duties, taxes and any provincial/territory assessments on the value of goods above the personal exemption. Future Issues at the Border The Canada Border Services Agency keeps a record of violations. Travelers into and out of Canada who develop a record of infractions may have issues crossing the border in the future and may be subject to more detailed examinations. Tip: The best course of action for anyone entering Canada, whether youre a citizen or not, is to have your identification and travel documents readily available.   Be honest and be patient, and youll be on your way quickly.
